Despite it being such a traditional business, the owner of this venture is surprisingly a 34 year old young man called Zhao You Ning, who ran a business in China doing industrial water filtration before returning to Singapore. When he was back, he sorely craved for a bowl of traditional chendol similar to that of which his grandfather used to make, but could not find anywhere in Singapore that sold it. This inspired him to set up his stall in 2017, and he named it after his grandfather who used to sell chendol off a push cart along Amoy Street. With guidance from his mother, he recreated his beloved grandfather's chendol and sells it to customers who long to taste this classic traditional dessert. The preparation of the dessert takes around 4 hours and he wakes up as early as 2am every morning just to do so. Everything is prepared by hand from scratch daily to ensure quality, and you can really taste it with every spoonful of this nostalgic dessert.

The stall specialises in just chendol and each bowl costs a mere $2. Here, shaved ice is doused in sweet 100% cold pressed coconut milk and then topped generously with red beans, green jelly pandan worms and gula melaka. The red beans were cooked to the point where they were perfectly soft but not too mushy and the green jelly worms were slippery and added hints of pandan flavour to every bite. The gula melaka is made from the nectar of coconuts that are imported from places like Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. Cooking the gula melaka alone takes around 8 hours and it is finished off by cooking it over charcoal, giving it its fragrant and slightly smoky taste. This helps to enhance the sweeter counterparts of the dessert as well as balancing it out. Overall, a simple yet well put together dish that truly brings out the beauty of this classic Chinese dessert.
