Instead of opening a posh restaurant like some of his other Masterchef counterpart, ex-Masterchef Singapore Season 1 finalist Aaron Wong decided to pursue a more humble venture called Jiak Song at 11 Telok Blangah Crescent. Jiak Song specialises in homely bowls of ban mian, which essentially translates to handmade noodles. Prior to this, he worked at multiple pop-up stores to hone his culinary craft and these have helped him start up Jiak Song and run the hawker business. He has gone on to open another four outlets at Bedok, Tampines, Queen Street (Bugis) and Jurong West so Singaporeans from all parts of the island can try his delicious food! As all the noodles in each of his stalls are handmade on the spot, portions are limited and they sell out before 2pm. So, do come early!

I’ve heard plenty of rave reviews about the food here and was really excited to try their offerings! I ordered myself the Signature All-in Combo (soup) that comes loaded with ingredients like pork slices, pork ball, and shrimp balls. You can choose your type of noodle like mee hoon kueh (flat noodles) as well but I got the classic ban mian. The soup was cloudy thanks to the minced pork and egg and was on the richer side. I also really love the ingredients — the pork was super tender and the prawn balls were very crunchy and made with real and fresh prawns.

Curious about the dry version of the dish, I also ordered their Signature Mee Hoon Kway with Pork Slices and Pork Ball in dry. Instead of soup, this comes drenched in a dark gravy which was another interesting way to enjoy the handmade noodles. I also felt like the noodles here were chewier with more bite as there was no soup to make it soggy. If you like their soup, fret not as the dry version still comes with a side of cloudy egg soup.
