178 Lor Mee is located at the Tiong Bahru food centre and is one of the two lor mee stalls there. They’ve been around for many years and can easily be identified by their large but simple white sign that says 178. The front of the store is plastered in newspaper clippings and pictures of the store owners with famous people as well as their awards. They’ve been Michelin Bib Gourmand winners from 2016 to 2019 which is a testament to how good their food is. What makes them stand out of the rest of the lor mee stalls in Singapore is their deep-fried shark nuggets, something you can rarely find in a hawker centre setting.

When I reached around 1pm on a weekday afternoon, I was greeted by a snaking long queue in the front of 178 Lor Mee. I queued for about 20 minutes before getting my food and the lor mee was served to me in a greet bowl. I also opted to add an egg to the dish for an additional 60 cents. I admittedly am not a fan of lor mee but saying that I was blown away by the dish would be an understatement. It truly was unlike any bowl of lor mee that I’ve ever tried — the noodles had just the right amount of firmness to it and were doused in a viscous, savoury and slightly sweet gravy that wasn’t too starchy unlike other lor mees that I’ve tried. The shark nuggets were also extremely crispy and added an addictive crunch to the dish. Bite into the nugget to reveal the shark flesh which honestly tastes pretty similar to white fish. Overall, this place really lives up to the hype and I am already craving for my next bowl!
