Kampong Carrot Cake was established at Tiong Bahru Market in the 1980s and is popular for its hearty plates of black and white carrot cake that is cooked the traditional way. You know that the stall is famous because its storefront is plastered with plenty of accolades like the Singapore Special 100 Commendation, Makansutra and the Singapore Hawker Masters 2012. Apart from that, the owner also was a specialist guest chef at a special hotel event. It’s said that local celebrities like Zoe Tay and Fann Wong have tried their food!

Kampong Carrot Cake also takes pride in the ingredients it uses, which includes high grade Thai rice with fresh white carrot.

I was very intrigued by this stall that had so many accolades and wondered if it lived up to all the hype — it did! They only have two dishes here — white carrot cake and black carrot. The prices here are $3, $4 and $5 depending on what size you want.

I got myself a plate of black carrot cake which featured carrot cake tossed in a dark, sweet sauce. Thanks to the dark soya sauce, there were charred, caramelised bits that added bursts of sweetness to every bite. The carrot cake itself was also soft but not too mushy. I really enjoyed the food here and can foresee myself coming back more often!
