Tiong Bahru Tau Suan has been in the local hawker scene for decades and was founded all the way back in 1942 by the late Mr Sng Han Chai.

It started out as a humble pushcart trolley and has now evolved into a popular stall at the bustling Tiong Bahru Market.

Now, the daughter-in-law and grandson of Sng Han Chai, Mdm Mukini and Sng Zi Hao, helm the stall, and prepare the desserts exactly the same way that has been done all these years.

Apart from tau suan, the stall also sells other desserts like bubur terigu and pulut hitam.

Signature

Bubur Terigu, Pulut Hitam, Tau Suan

When I arrived at Tiong Bahru Tau Suan on a weekday afternoon, there was no queue and I could happily order my food without any wait.

I wanted to try the pulut hitam but they were sold out for the day, so I ordered the tau suan instead. This came nice and warm.

For the uninitiated, tau suan is made with split mung beans that are turned into a starchy, sticky gravy. This is then topped with crispy you tiao for a contrast in texture.

The ones from Tiong Bahru Tau Suan sure do live up to the hype. The sauce was of just the right sweetness without being too cloying and paired well with the doughy youtiao.
