Hwa Yuen Porridge was founded in 1958 by Mr Yip Swee Wah as an itinerant stall at Kim Pong Road. He chose to hawk porridge as he found that it was an easy, straightforward dish to cook. He eventually passed the business to his son, Clement, who took over the reins in 1996. Clement’s wife, who married into the family, helps out as well. It’s said that Clement’s brother moved on to open Tiong Bahru Wah Yuen Porridge at Telok Blangah.

Hwa Yuen Porridge specialises in a range of classic porridge dishes such as fish porridge, shredded chicken century egg porridge and frog leg porridge.

I love a good ol bowl of porridge and the ones here at Hwa Yuen Porridge are just right up my alley! Got the Pork Porridge for just $3 (what a steal!) and this came loaded with a generous amount of ingredients like minced pork, sliced pork and pork liver. Just before it was served to me, the ladyboss also added a sprinkle of spring onions and white pepper for flavour.

The texture of the porridge was perfect too — very silky and extremely creamy. For its price point, this is truly worth it and a perfect option for those rainy days when you need something to warm you up. I will definitely be back!
