The small stall at Tanjong Pagar Food Centre offers a variety of Thai dishes at inexpensive prices. If you are heading during the lunch hour on weekdays, be prepared to queue up for a while because this is a hot spot in the CBD area. Helmed by 2 women - one who cooks and the other to take orders and serve. There is nothing too fancy about their shopfront or the images of their food, but judging by then umber of people queuing up for their favourite Thai food, it is clear that Issan Thai Food is a beloved stall.
The stall owner is very friendly as well, sometimes striking a conversation with their customers when they are waiting for their food. She remembers the customers by their looks and is very clear on who ordered what. From side dishes like omelette to Thai favourites like Pad Thai, Tom Yum Fried Rice and of course the Tom Yum soup, this stall is the place to go for cheap food options around the CBD area.
Signature
Basill Rice, Tom Yam Fried Rice
I ordered the Tom Yum Fried Rice. It took me about 15mins for my food, but was very pleased with my meal. Ordering a dish like Tom Yum is usually a hit or miss because you can’t gauge how spicy it can be, especially when they pride themselves as authentic Thai Food. In terms of spiciness, it wasn’t too overwhelming and even had a hint of sweetness in it. The Tom Yum Fried Rice has a couple of seafood ingredients such as prawns, squids, along with fishcake and vegetables.
In terms of portion, I thought it was good enough for one person. The rice was a little wet - probably because of the Tom Yum seasoning but it had a fragrant wok hey taste, which made it a pleasant one. Will be back to try the other dishes!
