Taman Jurong Market may be at the other end of Singapore for many people, but the hawker centre is home to a plethora of gems, such as BBQ Seafood.
Since its establishment in 1998, as the name of the restaurant, Seafood, has been serving fresh seafood on hot plates for over 20 years. As the name BBQ suggests, everything is cooked over charcoal. Expect a crowd right before the dinner crowd hits, where people decide to queue early so they can avoid a long wait. The yellowing and old signboard is a telltale sign that the store has been at the market for years and despite the simple set up, you can tell that the food is good. At the front of the shop is a freezer packed with ice and you can look at the variety of fresh seafood neatly displayed, waiting to be cooked. Apart from stingray, they also have other seafood such as prawns, squid and clams.

Signature

Sambal Stingray

I was shocked when I saw the menu for BBQ Seafood, especially the stingray! Typically, in Singapore, the price range for BBQ is between $12 to $16 so I was really surprised to find that the stingray here was below $10. In all honesty, I was expecting the stingray to be pretty small to match up with the price point, so imagine how I felt when I was presented with a rather sizable piece of stingray that is good enough for two people! The massive piece of meat was slathered in a homemade sambal sauce that was sweet, spicy and savoury all at once. My dining companion even commented that he could eat it all on its own with a bowl of rice. The stingray itself was perfectly cooked and was very tender and moist, just how I like my stingray. They also have larger portions for $12 which is still quite a steal and these are great for sharing with a large group of people.
