Would you believe that the founder of Lixin Teochew Fishball Noodles first started the business from a humble pushcart?

Now, they have several outlets scattered across Singapore in air-conditioned food courts and malls — look how far they've come!

Back in the stall's heyday, the owner would travel all the way to the fishery port in Jurong just to buy freshly caught yellowtail fish. Then, he would spend six hours painstakingly preparing the fish just to make his fishballs.

In the 70s, the owner set up his first stall at Bedemeer Road Hawker Centre with his wife. Later, this was demolished, so the business was moved to Toa Payoh, where the original stall still is today.

In 2009, they opened their next outlet at Ion Orchard Road Food Opera with their son, Eddie, and they went on to open ten more outlets in air-conditioned food courts across Singapore!

But despite the fast expansion, the fish products are all still prepared with fresh ingredients and yellowtail fish. These are also made in the central kitchen to maintain quality throughout the various outlets.

I visited the stall around 12.30pm on a weekend and in all honesty, I didn't expect it to be open as they're known to close quite early. So I was pleasantly surprised to find that they were still open!

As anticipated, there was a queue, but this did move along quite quickly and I got my food in around 10 minutes.

There was only the option of kuay teow and yellow mee left. Usually, I'd order mee pok or mee kia but I made do and got the kuay teow. And I'm so glad that they were out of the usual mee kia and mee pok because the kway teow was good! Not like the typical kway teow. These felt handmade and had a springier, more textured mouthfeel than your usual kway teow.

Also, the fishballs here really lived up to their name. Right off the bat, I could tell that these were handmade thanks to the irregular texture. The fishy taste was also more prominent that your run off the mill fishballs so you can tell that it was handmade. This place truly lives up to the hype!
