Ah Nian Braised Duck Rice is located in Chinatown, and despite the many stalls in the hawker centre, don’t be too shocked to see a queue forming at Ah Nian, for this stall do serve up some really good and affordable dishes.
Additionally, it opens till dinner time and so, catering to another whole meal crowd that are looking for a savoury dish to end their day.
What makes this stall one that people look forward to is because they braise their own duck, and knowing exactly what their customers are looking for. These days, there are not that many stalls that braise their own duck because of the strenuous hard work and time that takes to do it. And it shows in their food. Of course, for those are looking for a spicy twist to it, get the chilli to complement your dish. It is not uncommon for a duck stall to serve Kway Chap as well, and so for one looking for a soupy option, Kway Chap is a great alternative for that extra kick.
I ordered the Kway Chap with add-ons for a plate of duck. For one, the stall is known for their duck, and so having a plate of duck on the side feels the right thing to do.
The square rice sheets were thin, smooth and chewy. It doesn’t break when scooped and the broth-soup really complemented well with it. The assortment of braised ingredients that came with it didn’t fall short in taste either. The intestines were chewy and clean, tau pok and braised pork meat were flavoured properly. While it does tend to lean towards the salty side, it went well with the rice sheets.
For the duck slices, it was soft, chewy and bites through with one bite. The braised flavour hits right through with a strong aroma of the spices. Couldn’t have asked for a better meal.
