Hor fun can be found pretty much anywhere in Singapore — from hawker stalls to coffee shops, to even restaurants. In a hawker setting, it is usually served with simple ingredients like fishcake, vegetables and minced meat.
However, at Tuck Kee Ipoh Sah Hor Fun, it comes with more premium ingredients like prawns, pacific clams and even crayfish.
The business has been around for over four decades and currently is situated at Hong Lim Food Centre.
The business is helmed by two elderly folk who meticulously prepare the food upon order.
While the ingredients are premium, prices are kept reasonable and the most expensive menu item is the Crayfish Hor Fun, which goes for $11. It also is the stall's signature dish, and for a good reason too.
Queues here can stretch up to quite long and they close once they are sold out, so do head down early during lunch to avoid disappointment.
When I arrived at the stall, I was surprised to see that there was no queue, so I think that I got really lucky.
I ordered the option that came with prawns and razor clams and this was whipped up really fast for me on the spot.
The dish features a generous amount of hor fun noodles doused in a glistening, viscous gravy and topped with large prawns, vegetables and razor clams.
I appreciated how the prawns had already been pealed for me and the razor clams were clean without the sandy texture. I was also pleasantly surprised by the portion size which was quite substantial.
But what I really enjoyed was the noodles. The gravy had a light sweet and savoury taste and this was soaked up by the hor fun, which are the thinner variation. The noodle texture was also al dente and chewy, which I really enjoyed.
