Since 1979, Punggol Nasi Lemak has been dishing out wholesome plates of nasi lemak that is well-loved by many Singaporeans. The brand was founded by Mr. Ang Chye Choon and Madam Koh Ah Tan who started off by delivering traditional pre-packed nasi lemak in banana leaves to distributors and hawker stalls. Today, they have multiple stores across Singapore and are also a popular supper spot for peckish night owls. The third generation owner of the brand, Edmund Ang, invested in automated machines to help speed up the food preparation task while the workers continue to do other duties like preparing signature menu items and their unique sambal.

I visited their Tanjong Katong outlet, which allows you to customise your nasi lemak to how you like with the available ingredients. These are all displayed upfront behind a glass display case and all you need to do is point to the ingredients you want. I was pretty spoilt for choice but eventually chose their stir-fry eggplant, chicken wing, fried egg and fried fish cake. I like how they have some Chinese-style dishes like eggplant, giving the selection more variety. I also really love their sambal — it wasn’t overwhelmingly spicy and was slightly nutty too. Additionally, I need to give their chicken wing a mention as it is one of the best nasi lemak chicken wings I’ve ever had! Very crispy and the batter used is excellent.
