The stall has been around for years and has been passed down from generation to generation within the family. Specialising in putu piring, which for the uninitiated, is a soft and airy Malay sweet that is similar to the Chinese traditional sweet tutu kueh. Aisha is currently the one running the show at Haig Road Putu Piring and she put aside her dream of becoming a pastry chef just to help her family carry on the tradition of selling this fast-disappearing Malay sweet. That sacrifice paid off because today, Haig Road Putu Piring is the name people think of when they crave for this dessert and it even was featured in the Netflix series “Street Food”.

Apart from the classic gula melaka, they sell other flavours like chocolate, coconut and durian. I decided to try the gula melaka and durian. The durian putu piring here is made using D24 durian paste and is a great choice for durian lovers. Overall, the filling adds a nice contrast to the light and airy exterior without being too cloying. Despite the fact that I like durian, I preferred the gula melaka. You can tell that they use very high quality gula melaka based on just the taste alone and it was sweet with a slight smokiness.
