Tiong Bahru Pau and Snacks have been making their pau by hand since 1969, and have expanded to 5 outlets around Singapore. While they do serve a plethora of dim sum - from fried flaky puffs and Egg Tarts to steamed Chicken Pau and of course, their famous Char Siew Pau (BBQ pork buns). The outlet at Tiong Bahru is mainly a pick-and-go area, but queues start to form quite early in the day, and you’ll see cars parking on the side of the curb just to get their hands on these bite-sized snacks. Surprisingly the menu (and price list) at that outlet is only printed in Chinese, so foreign friends who are unable to read Chinese may have to resort to pointing or to use their power of body language. Definitely get their popular Char Siew Pau, eaten at anytime of the day.

When it comes to char siew pau, I don’t have a particular favourite as long as the dough is soft, and the filling is not too sweet. I don’t ever question when my mom or friends get these pau for me, however, after tasting the ones from Tiong Bahru Pau, perhaps this may be one of my top 5 favourites.

While there are people who feel the cost does not justify its size - yes, it is rather petite, a little smaller than a palm size, I do feel that with those chunky bits of pork when you bite into are simply tasty - not too sweet and that beautiful smokey taste. The dough is soft and light to the bite and doesn’t get stuck in your teeth. Best consumed hot.
