Chicken rice is one of Singapore’s most iconic local food and although there are many shops offering their variations of chicken rice, Loy Kee has a long history of serving up one of the best Hainanese chicken rice in Singapore. Loy Kee started from a small store in 1953 at Raymond Market and now has a few outlets, including a restaurant setting that not only is it air-conditioned and comfortable, their food menu has expanded tremendously to include other food items like homemade soups, curry chicken, etc.

Unlike those you often get at hawker centres, Loy Kee’s signature 1-person set comes with vegetables, soup, a whole plate of chicken, three types of sauces and of course the aromatic rice, served in a large circular tray that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Signature

Beef Stew Noodles, Char Siew Wanton Noodles, Fried Prawn Roll, Hainanese Beef Stew, Loy Kee Special Set, Mutton Soup, Watercress Soup

I was rather surprised at the huge tray of food that was served but I did like how I had everything I need or possibly needed on that tray, such as the sauces that are usually paired with the rice and chicken.

The chicken was succulent and tender, and had just the right amount of sauce drizzled over it. I enjoyed how I was given not just the wings or breast meat, but various parts of the chicken to chew on. Needless to say, the rice was aromatic and grainy, and had a nice chicken broth flavour to it. Though a little pricey compared to other shops, it was a full and hearty meal I couldn’t ask for more.
