Chatterbox has been around since 1971 and is known for its premium takes on local Singapore favourites — especially its Mandarin Chicken Rice set.

It first opened at the former Mandarin Singapore and in the 80s, it was even thought of as the place to have the top chicken rice in Singapore.

But the best chicken rice doesn't come cheap and once upon a time, it cost a whopping $27 for just one set.

The recipe, unsurprisingly, is heavily guarded and it is said that only six chefs in the restaurant's history know the secret recipe. It is remained quite unchanged over the years and they still get their birds from the same Malaysian farm supplier that they have been with for over 30 years!

After Chatterbox's recent facelift a few months back, the price has been adjusted to $25 before GST and service charge. Each set comes with all the works — fragrant rice, condiments (dark sauce, chilli and ginger), soup, and of course, the chicken.

The chicken rice from Chatterbox has been on my food bucket list for the longest time and I finally got to try it!

I visited on a weekday evening and it was not as crowded as I was worried it would be. I was guided in and seated by the friendly staff and before even placing my order, I was already blown away by the interior of the restaurant — it certainly felt very luxe!

I was spoilt for choice but eventually settled for the chicken rice (of course!), hokkien mee, otah and coconut ice cream.

The chicken rice was definitely one of the better ones I've had. The chicken flesh had a very silky smooth texture and was extremely tender, as if it had been poached. I don't usually eat chicken skin but the one here was so good that I ate it gladly. Paired together with the fragrant, separated rice, this was a match made in heaven. It was good enough to enjoy without condiments but the condiments were so good (especially the chili!) that I couldn't help dunking my chicken in it anyway. My only gripe was the soup, it tastes very ordinary, save for the included tofu.

The hokkien mee was delightful too and came with premium seafood such as massive prawns, scallops and squid, all which were very fresh. Prawn stock was rich too and the only issue I had was that it could do with more wok hei.

The otah was also another surprisingly good dish and in it, I found generous, tender chunks of fish. Spice level was also just right.

And the perfect way to end off the meal was with the coconut ice cream, which is another Chatterbox classic that has been around for decades. This featured coconut ice cream mixed with chocolate and topped with balls of lychee — an absolute masterpiece!
