Sinn Ji Hainanese Chicken Rice [Closed]
It’s not easy to open a stall selling only 1 main dish, and it takes a lot of courage to sell one of Singapore’s most popular dish ever – Chicken Rice. Young chef Derwin opened Sinn Ji Hainanese Chicken Rice a few years ago, selling poached and roasted chicken rice. He apparently came up with his own innovation to get the right texture of the poached chicken, by inserting a metal tube while poaching the chicken to ensure the liquid and heat is circulated in the whole chicken.
The area itself can sit about 15 people, and there are different set meals for either a single person or for group meals, as well as mixed of both poached and roasted chicken. Of course you head in expecting to pay a little more than your hawker price, but for the quality of food you are getting and the ambiance, I’d say it’s quite worth it.
There are also other side dishes like chicken rolls, omelette and tofu for sharing plates. As for drinks, they may not have your coffee and tea fare, but other drinks like barley and lemon tea.
I ordered a 1 person poached chicken rice set, which includes a plate of poached chicken, a bowl of rice and a plate of vegetables. As there weren’t many customers when I was there, my dinner came in about 10 minutes.
The chicken had this glistening look, from the light soy sauce and oil from the skin, and served a good generous amount for one person. The chicken is tender and chewy, with a sweet and flavourful taste in every bite. The rice is grainy and fragrant, pairs well with the chicken. Like most chicken rice, I’d say go with the garlic chilli and the ginger sauce for the extra punch.
Overall, it’s a great and hearty meal, even though it’s a dish that I’ve tried multiple times on many occasions. But I’d never say no to a good plate of Chicken Rice and Sinn Ji is one that I’ll be willing to go back for more.
