Lucky Chicken Rice, named after the mall itself, first opened its doors in 1991. It is one of the few places in the bustling shopping district that sells affordable and delicious plates of chicken rice. The shop is rustic yet clean and cosy and it is especially popular with foreigners who love to gather at the mall to meet up with their friends. While their main speciality is chicken rice, they also sell a variety of other local dishes that you can pair along with your chicken rice. Currently, the original owners are not manning the store, but a group of friendly elderly staff. Aside from chicken rice, they also have other local options such as Shredded Chicken Hor Fun and Dumpling Soup.
They have both roast and steamed chicken rice available for order and you can also opt between normal cuts of chicken and chicken wing or chicken drumstick. I decided to get the Boneless Steam Chicken Rice for $5 and it came with the rice separated from the chicken and a bowl of soup. The cuts of chicken were pretty generous and each slice was tender, plump and very juicy. I also appreciate how the chicken was not too oily and cloying. The rice, on the other hand, was fragrant and fluffy. To add some flavour, you can dunk the chicken in the provided chilli sauce which was pungent and packed a fiery punch. Definitely very worth it, especially since it is located in town!
