It seems like a no-brainer when you have no idea what to get for lunch or dinner, and there is a chicken rice stall – a famed one, no less! Leong Yeow Chicken Rice has been in operation since 1974, selling options for steamed chicken, roast chicken, char siew and roast pork.

The outlet at Waterloo Street seems like where it all started (hence, Waterloo in its name) and there are newspaper and magazine cutout clippings pinned around the stall, with an old lady serving customers, along with a man who chops and prepares your order.

The hawker centre itself is considered rather small, with about 10 stalls operating there and Leong Yeow takes up about 2 units of it – a good testament of how popular they are. The area itself is rather clean, but it gets really crowded during peak dining times so be prepared to queue.

Ordering a plate of chicken rice may seem nothing out of the ordinary, but for most Singaporeans and their critical palates, it isn’t just another plate of chicken rice, but about upholding the nation’s favourite food.

And glad to say Leong Yeow is one of my favourites, not only with the grainy and fragrant rice, but the tender and chewy chicken meat as well. The rice doesn’t stick to one another, and each feels like it’s coated with a thin layer of oil, making it just right for both the taste and the texture. It doesn’t bother in making sure the rice is shaped into a bowl, which makes for the rice to ‘breathe’ and spread out nicely on the plate. For the chicken, portion wise is great for one person, soft enough for your fork to cut into it. Of course, salty soup on the side and garlic chilli – a must for all chicken rice lovers.

Will definitely not be my last time here.
