If you are ever in the vicinity of Cityhall or Beach Road and itching for some local fare, YY Kafei Dian is the place to head over for some old-school charm. The shopfront is also has a distinctive kopitiam (coffee shop) vibe, against the row of posh and clean shops, often spotted with a crowd of people having their meals.

The baked buns with kaya and butter are their best sellers, along with other savoury main dishes like Chicken Rice, soft boiled eggs, noodles, been hoon, etc. Of course, their coffee and tea are something not to be missed as well. However, if you are getting their been hoon, I’d say head there early for your breakfast fare.

There really isn’t a menu to refer to, most things are still very old school, with the shopkeepers writing down the orders in pen and paper instead of keying it to a system that most of us are used to.

I am quite ashamed that I did not know YY Kafei Dian existed before this, and I am so glad I was able to taste their toast bread. As someone who loves bread and toast, I’d say this has got to be one of the best buns with spread. As they come in such a huge portion, I didn’t know if the buns halved were sold as one or 2 slices were considered one. As each bun is only toasted when order, you will have to wait about 10-15 minutes for your buns.

The buns have a light crispy crunch on the outside and soft fluffy and chewy bread on the inside. The buns are sandwiched with a generous spread of kaya and a thick slab of butter. For someone who loves bread, this is really quite something else. While the kaya can be quite sweet, it was worth all the calories. Of course, nothing beats a good pairing of coffee or tea to go with your toast.

Will be back for the other food options and whenever I feel like having some toasted buns, perfect for an afternoon snack.
