Unagiya Ichinoji is from Tokyo and is an branch that is part of Miyagawa Honten, which is a famous unagi restaurant in Tokyo that has been around for almost 130 years. It's outlet in Meguro-ku, Tokyo, even received the Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2018.

The Japanese head chef here at Unagiya Ichinoji has undergone 3 long months of training at the original Miyagawa outlet just to master the skills! The secret of their excellent unagi truly lies in their grilling technique and inhouse sauce which has been passed down several generations.

Here, you can enjoy unagi in 3 different styles — Hitsumbushi, Seiro Mushi and Mamushi Donburi.

The restaurant was a little hard to find as it was hidden at a back alley near the toilets.

When I visited on a Sunday evening, the restaurant was quiet so I didn't have to queue.

My dining companion and I ordered the Unagi Wagyu Hitsumbushi as well as the Shirayaki Ikura Hitsumbushi. We also had the grilled squid to share.

What I really like about Hitsumbushi is that you can eat your unagi 3 ways — my favourite is soup-style!

The Unagi Wagyu Hitsumbushi was delicious! Unagi was well-cooked and a good balance of sweet and savoury. The meat was uber tender too. The wagyu was not bad as well and very moist and juicy.

Shirayaki Ikura Hitsumbushi is good for people who like their unagi less saucy. Also love the addition of roe, which gave the dish pops of flavour.

While the speciality here is unagi, I still thoroughly enjoyed the grilled squid which was surprisingly tender and not rubbbery.
