The owner of the restaurant, Teo Poh Hwa, started the eatery as a tribute to his parents who also ran an establishment called Old House back in the 1970s that was closed down due to his mother’s ailing health. One wall in the restaurant is even done up to look like the old-fashioned wooden door of his home in the past! Mr Teo eventually managed to track down his parent’s old suppliers so that he could get the ingredients needed to make their family special sauces and seasonings that are crucial in the cooking process. They’ve been famous for their prawn noodles for years and now even have a unique prawn noodle dish called Dinosaur Prawn Mee.

The Dinosaur Prawn Mee ($15) is definitely on the pricier end of the spectrum as compared to most other prawn noodles, but for a good reason. The ‘dinosaur’ here is represented by the massive prawns that are the centrepiece of the dish. These are sliced down in the middle so it’s easier to eat and were very succulent and juicy. The prawns weren’t the only huge things in the bowl; the pork ribs were pretty hefty too and were similarly very juicy with a decent fat to meat ratio. I also loved the soup which was extremely rich and chock full of umami; you could tell by the flavours that it had been boiled for very long! Another famous dish is their signature Old House Thick Soup Noodle ($6/9/12) which can be thought of as white lor mee due to its thick, starchy soup. This comes loaded with prawns, slivers of pork belly, clams and vegetables. The noodles were nice and springy and I really loved the soup which is very rich and creamy.
