The last place one would expect to find a okonomiyaki store in Singapore is Little India, but here we are.
Seiwaa Okonomiyaki & Teppanyaki Restaurant is located at a quiet street in between Jalan Besar and Little India but you can easily spot it thanks to its rustic, Japanese decor. The establishment has won numerous awards such as Top 3 Japanese restaurants in Little Indian from 2019 to 2022 as well as the Best Business of 2018. Apart from that, it has been featured in newspapers too!
Apparently, in order to perfectly replicate the flavours and quality of an authentic Japanese okonomiyaki, the staff here need to train for at least three months before they are considered ready to serve customers — talk about effort!
Signature
Buta Don, Karaage Chicken (6pcs), Kushi Katsu Platter B (12pcs), Mix Okonomiyaki (Pork, Squid, Shirmp), Nagoya Chicken Wings, Salmon & Bacon Chahan (Fried Rice), Seiwaa Curry Rice, Seiwaa Tonkatsu Ramen, Weiwaa Signature Salad, Whole Squid
I never expected to find such cosy Japanese restaurant in Little India and the walking into space made me feel like I had been transported to Japan itself.
When I entered the restaurant, the staff gave me the option of sitting at a table with a grill or a normal table. As I wanted to eat their famous oknomiyaki and teppanyaki, I knew I had to sit at a table with a grill for the full experience! The menu rendered me and my dining companion spoilt for choice, but we eventually settled for the Mix Monja ($18) that comes with pork, squid and shrimp, as well a Flavour Meat Grill Plate ($55) that is good for two pax and comes with an assortment of meats like pork, chicken, bacon, lamb, beef and vegetables.
I initially thought that I would have to grill everything myself but was pleased to find that the friendly staff would help you do so! This definitely was a treat for the eyes (and my camera!) and it felt like a performance watching the chef skillfully grill my food.
It wasn’t just for show either — the food tasted fantastic too! The okonomiyaki truly tasted like something you could get in Japan itself and texture and flavours were on point. I also loved the grill meats and though the price tag is a little hefty, you’re truly paying for quality. As I can’t travel to Japan for now, this is a good option!
