Housed within the umbrella of Ramen Champion at Bugis+, this eatery attracts the crowd with their staple donburi menu items as well as their take on local-inspired dishes like Chilli Crab and Salted Egg Yolk.

Ordering at Ramen Champion can be a little confusing, finding your direction as to where to place and collect your order. While the food is done at the Don Meijin counter, drinks are collected at a central stall that services all the other stalls as well.

Each bowl is prepared when ordered and while the queue wasn’t long, I waited about 15 minutes for my donburi to arrive - not a long wait considering the peak dinner period. For a unique donburi dish, the price was generally affordable for a restaurant meal.

I was pleasantly surprised to see a chilli crab flavoured donburi with lots of tempura selections in it as well. They include tempura prawns, pumpkin, eggplant, asparagus and fish. I’ll recommend to top up a little more for the set as you’ll get a side dish and a drink.

Firstly, I enjoyed the plating of this donburi, neatly placed are the tendons and it is served with the chilli crab sauce on the side. This is great because not everyone is willing to dive in to the thick gravy and it may cause your tempura selections to turn soggy after a while as well.

I thought the chilli crab sauce was rather sweet and has a hint of spiciness. While it does taste very similar to the sauce you’d find at a chilli crab dish, I didn’t think it goes very well with the rice. As a dipping sauce, it definitely taste well, but as a personal taste, I thought rice with chilli crab sauce was weird. The tempura was deep-fried well - crisp on the outside and soft and warm on the inside. Ingredients were very fresh as well.
