For over 40 years, Founder Bak Kut Teh, which flagship outlet is tucked away on Balestier Road, is known as one of the best bak kut teh brands in Singapore.

The founder, Mr Chua Chwee Whatt, who was once a pig farmer in Seletar, wanted to create his own bak kut teh brand after trying many other brands in Singapore but not being pleased with the food there. He felt like this was because of the poor ingredients used, so he decided to create his own bak kut teh with his own pigs that he rears himself.

He ensures that only the best and freshest pork ribs are used in the soup, which gives it its rich flavour. These are simmered with a specially formulated broth of herbs and spices which gives them that iconic peppery taste. The recipe is a special one that Chua Chwee Whatt created all by himself and perfected over the years, which results in the famous bak kut teh it is today.

Currently, the stall at Balestier is operated by Chua's son and the family-run business hopes to expand its business across Southeast Asia by franchising so more people can try their delicious bak kut teh.

I love bak kut teh and have heard so much about Founder's Bak Kut Teh, so I was really excited to try it.

I ordered the bak kut teh along with the pig trotters and some dough fritters (you tiao). The bak kut teh really was very good and the ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender. The soup was also intensely peppery and rich thanks to the fresh ingredients used.

Dipping the fried you tiao in that delicious soup is the best way to enjoy it!

I also really loved the pig trotters which had a good amount of collagen. The meat was also uber tender and fatty. The gravy it was doused in was also a good balance of sweet and savoury.

Am looking forward to come back and try their other offerings like their pigs intestines and crispy prawn rolls.
