Nantsuttei had humble beginnings in Japan and was founded by a man name Ichiro Furuya.
He founded Nantsuttei when he was just 27 years old and back then, he was struggling with no goals and a lack of direction in life.
What inspired him to set up a ramen shop was a show on TV, which had a long line of people queueing at a ramen shop.
Determined to achieve his dream, he went to train in Kyushu and also tried out a variety of ramen shops, where he fell in love with the ramen flavours of Kumamoto prefecture.
After everything, he eventually opened Nantsuttei in his hometown, Hadano.
However, things only got harder from there. As the restaurant was in a poor location, business was not the best. However, Ichiro Furuya persevered and continued to work on his recipe.
Eventually, news about his humble ramen shop spread and it began being featured in the media. And finally, he got the same line of customers similar to what he saw on TV many years ago.
After setting up a few more outlets and moving the main store to Shinatatsu in front of Shinagawa Station, Nantsuttei also opened its first overseas venture in Singapore at Orchard Central, which it is equally as popular.
Signature
Nantsuttei Tonkotsu Ramen
I visited Nantsuttei one Saturday evening and there was a very long queue! I waited around 10 minutes before I was seated.
There were several ramen options that left me spoilt for choice but I eventually settled for the Nantsuttei Tonkotsu Ramen and Golden Curry Ramen. We also got the FuuFu Enman Gyoza as a side dish.
The tonkotsu ramen was so good! Creamy, rich and packed with umami, the thick broth was the perfect combination with the springy ramen noodles! You can also choose the texture of your noodles and I got hard because noodles usually get soggy fast in soup.
The curry ramen was also an interesting choice, especially since it was my first time having something like this. The curry smell was very fragrant but I think it would have tasted better with thicker noodles. Still, it was delicious.
The gyoza was fantastic also. It was pan fried to a nice crisp and was very crunchy and juicy!
