While Singapore is home to many peranakans, there are not as many eateries that sell peranakan food as compared to other cuisines.
Nyonya Memories is one of the few places that do so and they have been at Thomson Plaza for several years already.
The brand is actually by Ivins, one of the most famous peranakan restaurants in Singapore. Ivins has been in the local F&B scene since the 70s and Nyonya Memories sells their signature dises and kueh that are well-loved by many Singaporeans.
If you're spoilt for choice, some of their must-try dishes include the Ayam Buah Keluak, Beef Rendang and Chap Chye. They also sell desserts like the classic chendol.
As a peranakan, I'm very picky about peranakan food because I believe that my grandmothers are the benchmark for good food.
So I really wanted to see how Nyonya Memories fared.
I visited the restaurant on a Friday night around 7.30pm, a little before they closed at 9pm.
Apart from a la carte menu items, they also have sets for individuals, as well as 2 or 4 diners. My husband and I got the set for 2 pax, which came with beef rendang, chap chye, assam fish and our choice of dessert.
Beef rendang is a risky dish because it is easy to overcook the meat, so I was elated to find that the beef here was fork-tender and very juicy. The rendang sauce was also sedap (malay for delicious)!
The assam fish was also surprisingly good. It was boneless and tender, with the sauce not being too sour.
I adored the chap chye as well which tasted as good as the ones I had when I was a child.
