Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry opened in the 1970s and is now helmed by the fourth-generation owners. It is common to see a long queue at this confectionery shop as it is known for its yummy traditional Nonya kuehs.
Go for the Ondeh Ondeh, which gets sold out pretty quickly, but head there only after 12.30pm as they are only available in the afternoon. Freshly made in-store each day, you can choose to get a single ondeh ondeh, but seriously, after queuing for such a long while, you wouldn’t want to waste your time by just getting a Nonya kueh. Try the other popular kuehs, or get some cakes for tea, or even the biscuits as munchies over the weekend while you enjoy your Netflix and Japanese shows.

Nonya kuehs are known to be Singapore’s beloved sweet or savoury bite-sized snacks. With over 20 different kuehs to choose from at the shop, it was just an overload of food options, like a little girl in a candy shop. Of course, Ondeh Ondeh is a must-try, and when my turn came at about 1.20pm, about half of the tray of Ondeh Ondeh was gone. So head over early to get a bite of the sweet, gooey treat.
The dough was chewy and coated with fresh grated coconut which gave a nice added texture. But the highlight of any ondeh ondeh is the gula melaka core that just oozes out in each bite. Be warned that it may burst out depending how you bite it, so they are made small for a reason - put the whole thing in your mouth! This ondeh ondeh isn’t as sweet, so it gets addictive, popping them one after an another.
