When one mentions Teochew porridge, Heng Long Teochew porridge is one of the first places that come to mind. For the uninitiated, it’s similar to cai fan (mixed rice) where you can pick and choose what dishes you want to accompany your porridge, which is more on the watery side as compared to your typical congee. With five outlets at Upper Serangoon Road, Tampines Street, Tanjong Katong Road, North Bridge Road and Macpherson Road, it is convenient to find one that’s near you. Once you step into the shop, you’ll be greeted by rows and rows of dishes that are neatly displayed behind an acrylic case. To order, just point at the dishes and these will be scooped out onto small plates for you. While it is a porridge stall, you can also opt to enjoy the dishes with rice as well.
I absolutely love Teochew porridge and it is a form of comfort food for me, so I was glad to have found Heng Long Teochew Porridge. I came here for a late dinner at around 9pm and the shop was still open! Perfect for night owls and people who end work late. I was spoilt for choice by the sheer amount of available options and finally decided on dishes like clams, otah, tau kee and pork belly. They also provide plenty of condiments on the sides like fermented beans and chilli sauce. Teochew porridge is also great for sharing so you’re encouraged to enjoy a meal here with your family and friends!
