Chinatown Complex Market

The Kreta Ayer Complex was constructed in 1981 as part of the urban regeneration of Chinatown. It was renamed Chinatown Complex in 1984. Thus, when the market and food centre was finished that year, it was subsequently named Chinatown Complex Market and Food Centre. When the last of the Chinatown street hawkers relocated into the fresh $18 million complex in October 1983, 300 street hawkers from the nearby streets were moved there. Throughout the years, the complex had been comforting for all the street hawkers who had been carrying the heritage of the traditional foods of Chinatown. Many of the hawkers had stayed at the complex for decades. By 2016, there were around 20% of the pioneer hawkers who could still be found at the cooked food zone of the complex.
